“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.” (Psalm 127: 3-5)
Advise from the Wise
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
“These commandments I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6: 6-9)
“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13)
“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion to those who fear Him.” (Psalm 103:13)
“For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” (Genesis 18:19)
Teaching Your Children
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12)
“Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction, pay attention and gain understanding. I give you learning so do not forsake my teaching. For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart, keep my commands, and you will live.” (Proverbs 4:1-4)
“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” (Proverbs 23:32)
“Children be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:20)
“Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife, loves himself.” (Ephesians 5: 25-28)
You Are Your Child’s Role Model
“Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family will and see that his children obey him, and he must do so int a manner worthy of full respect.” (1 Timothy 3:2-5)
Children watch everything. They hear how you speak to, and treat, others.
“Husbands. Love your wives and never treat them harshly.” (Colossians 3:19)
By being a husband who loves his wife, and treats her with respect, you are teaching your son’s how to treat women, as well as teaching your daughters how they should expect to be treated by men.
“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.” (Proverbs 17:27)
“For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into His kingdom and glory.” (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12)
Disciplining Those You Love
“My son do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent His rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in.” (Proverbs 3:11-12)
“Endure hardship as discipline, God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?” (Hebrews 12:7)
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
“He who withholds his rod hates his son; But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.” (Proverbs 13:24)
“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you rebuke Him, He will reject you forever.” (1 Chronicles 28:9)
Discipline, with Love
We are to discipline our children, as God discipline us. But God always disciplines with love and compassion. He encourages us to be firm with our children and guide them in the ways of God.
“Fathers do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.” (Colossians 3:21)
“Fathers do not exasperate your children; instead, bring the up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)
“But whoever causes one of thee little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him to give a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6)
The Rewards of Parenthood Are Endless
“The father of a righteous child has great joy, a man who fathers a son rejoices in him.” (Proverbs 23:24)
“The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.” (Proverbs 20:7)
“Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house, your children like olive plants around your table. Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord.” (Psalm 128: 3-4)
“Grandparent have the crowning glory of life: grandchildren. And it’s only proper for children to take pride in their parents.” (Proverbs 17:6)
