This evening Doug Fields from Saddleback Church (Lake Forest, CA) kicked off the opening session of Church on the Move’s youth conference, Elevate06. Doug taught on the importance of learning to focus your efforts not on what is important but what is more important. All too often, we as ministers can become preoccupied focusing on what is important that we forget about the more important aspects of our calling.
He made seven different comparisons ranging from focusing on passion vs. programs to focusing on church health vs. attendance. However, my favorite comparison he made is how relationships are more important than relevance. One can study a culture to discover what appeals to them, but true relevant ministry is created through relationships with the people you are called to reach.
