The Gallup Poll recently studied how Americans feel about the role of organized religion in the United States.

  • 39% of Americans say that the influence of organized religion in the United States should be kept as is
  • 32% would like organized religion to have less influence “in this nation”
  • 27% would like organized religion to have more influence

Satisfaction Levels

  • 56% of Americans currently say they are satisfied with the influence of organized religion
    >>> 35% of satisfied Americans want more religious influence
    >>> 15% of satisfied Americans want less religious influence
  • 39% say they are not satisfied
    >>> 17% of dissatisfied Americans want more religious influence
    >>> 58% of dissatisfied Americans want less religious influence

The Turning Point

  • Between 2001 and 2004, Americans were slightly more likely to say that organized religion should have more influence rather than less influence in the country.
  • Since 2005, however, the lines have crossed, and now slightly more Americans say that organized religion should have less influence rather than more influence.

From these statistics, we can assume that Christians are not as passionate about increasing their influence as non-Christians are about weakening the influence of Christianity. If this is true, it means that many American Christians do not take the Great Commission seriously (Matthew 28:18-20).
