I might be missing something, but SoChurch seems like a social networking website made just for members of a local church. While content can still be pushed out by users to their Facebook and Twitter accounts, they need to come to the SoChurch community to interact with one another.
Although it has other features like e-mail and a member directory I find myself feeling underwhelmed. I’ve seen SoChurch hyped on a number of blogs and websites, but to be honest I don’t see what the big deal is.
I feel like I am missing out on a communications epiphany, can someone clue me in?
Good thoughts, Josh.
My thoughts are SoChurch isn’t right for everyone, but for some churches it fits perfectly for how they want to communicate with their members. I think of SoChurch more of like a 37Signals product. It may not be the most robust service, but that keeps it agile and easy to use and everything that many churches might need.
To churches who have been wanting that, it is hype worthy. To churches who need something different, the hype might leave them scratching their heads.
You make a good point Kent.
I don’t know that SoChurch would fit our congregation’s needs, but it is a cool product with some neat features. The fact that it plays nice with Fellowship One is a big plus.
Hey Josh,
SoChurch has taken a very different route from those that are trying to be a “social network for your church.” We cut out the personal inboxes, friend requests, and status updates and instead focusing on managing group communication within your church that that is then delivered to where your members already are (facebook, twitter, email, and later this year, SMS and mobile) while providing additional tools and resources for those that do come to the platform.
As for having to come to the platform to interact with each other, we encourage group interaction on our site, but drive people to connect (member directory) via the channels they are already using (phone, email, address, facebook, twitter) for one-to-one communication.
Let me (craig@sochurch.com) know if you have any questions or if you’re interested in checking out a demo.
Thanks Kent!
